^^^ exactly. And personal imports getting rego today does not mean that it will automatically have rego tomorrow.
I've known of a few cars imported as personal imports that were left for more than 3 months with expired rego not being able to get rego again... All have been exported to the UK or NZ or have become race cars.  Personal imports have extremely low chances of finding insurance. Not to mention they are impossible to get rid of once you get sick of the car.

I was offered a black 2009 quatroporte personal import a couple of years ago for less than $40k, equivalent cars then were asking well over $180k. Took a long time to find a buyer. I'm not interested in things that are longer than the QM2 and Titanic combined ;)

You'd have to have rocks for brains to PI a car that can get RAWS, even if you don't intend on selling it in the future. RAWS compliance just makes your life easier later on.
