I have a dilemma.
My father's old plate is in this batch. He died in 1979 when I was 8.
I have wanted this plate for years.
If no one bids and it fails to sell at auction, what happens?
Can a price be negotiated with DPTI or is that it?
Is $3500 too much to pay for a 6 digit?
I guess I'm unlikely to ever try and sell it but I'd prefer not to be overpaying if possible.
I'd love some advice from people who know what they're doing in this game.
Thanks

No dilemma at all. Make a bid, minimum bid. It's worth it.
Even if you pay $1k more, it won't matter when you consider the significance

If you can afford the $3,500-$4,500, just buy it....
From what I have heard, the plates that are not sold will go in "The Vault"......not to be released for a very long time, if ever again.

Have you requested it from TSA before?  Sometimes when I've done this they put it in the auction.  I got some double triples this way.

I agree with the others.  If it has significance, paying a bit over won't matter much. Or, if it attracted no bids, wait and ring TSA after the auction to try to get it cheaper.  I'm guessing they couldn't sell to you then because it wouldn't be an open race.  So go with plan A.

I'd like the number of our '64 Cedric.  It's a random 6 digit - not listed here but I'd be surprised if the car is still going so it should be available.  Trouble is, I've now got too many plates already.

In Victoria it is standard procedure to put a plate to open auction if someone requests the plate via normal channels. I am guessing it's the same in all states as they want to achieve maximum market price. If a plate doesn't sell it goes back in the vault until they have a reason to auction it again.

As for value and overpaying, it's only $3500 so there isn't a lot of scope for losing too much. The most you could possibly drop is $3500 and that's not likely.

So if it's significant just buy it. I wouldn't wait till after a no sale as they are just as likely to keep it for later rather than  accept an under reserve offer.

It goes back to them and will be a very long time before being offered again.

I am also trying to get my fathers plate and am yet to have it offered.

You are lucky
Grab it regardless.
