The crane operators have to do that each day.  The grated platform is for them to walk on to lubricate the bearings etc at the end of the boom.

Like many here, I loved climbing as a kid but as I've got older I'm finding I'm not as meed to climb.  Still think the video Dodge posted is excellent.  Those guys are crazy and skilled.  There was a TV show on sometime ago called the worlds dangerous jobs or something.  The name escapes me but it was great, the host was a rigger.
