I am so annoyed with ANZ prepaid travel debit cards that I thought I should share my recent experience in the USA with these damn cards.

1.  Whenever you check into a hotel, the hotel will swipe your card for whatever they feel.  For example I was in Vegas, hotels prepaid, but on arrival they swiped $2000  for a 4 day stay.

2. when I checked out, they charged another $2500 for expenses.

So $4.5K out of my travel card

This continued along a 3 week trip.

The issue is that the hotels don't refund the initial swipe for about 10 days.

So you end up running out of money.

So stuck in the USA with my other credit cards, which I didn't want to use, and NO CASH could be withdrawn from my Debit cards cause they were artificially maxed out.  BTW I didn't bring the normal ATM card because we didn't think we would need it!

No problems..I will transfer some money to my Travel Card.

So I transferred $20K from my bank account to the prepaid travel card using Bpay. (one of the methods recommended)
Well 4 days later, the $20K still had not reached my Travel card.

So I called them to complain.

My only option for quick funds was to transfer funds from one of my other cards to my travel card.

But of course these pricks charge you obnoxious interest rates on cash advances from your credit card to transfer to your travel card.

So I had to pay out my MasterCard before the due date.  $30K on the MasterCard..Plus another $10K in credit  so that when I transferred the $10K to the debit card I would not be hit with interest.

So by doing that I had funds in my Travel card immediately.

So if I didn't have the $60K in ready cash I would have been stranded in the USA with my kids, thanks to these pricks!

First and Last time I will use a travel card!

Just want to get this shit product out of my life without losing on the conversion back to Aussie Dollars.

Pros and cons of these cards?
The ANZ are pushing them hard with me for our trip, whats the catch compared to normal credit cards.
All I can see is .
1.Buy and sell rate on return to OZ.
2.$11 to purhase.
3.Cash ATM about $2.20 pure draw.

I have a Westpac Earth Card which I normally use on OS Trips.  They don't charge exchange rate commissions.
But I thought I would hedge the currency this time.
The amount of grief it caused us I would have gladly paid the exchange rate fluctuations.

Can you imagine being in the USA and having to watch each cash dollar for tips to the porter, door man, taxi rank guy!
