so once you've downloaded a movie -  you have 24 hrs to watch it

is there a way of recording it?

It's like five bucks, easier to just watch on demand.

Download the movie:
30-days to activate it.
Once activated - 48hrs to watch as many times as you like.

Just like a rental without late return fees.

You can stream any media to the Apple TV from your iTunes library or an AirPlay device.
Use HANDBRAKE (free) to convert DVD or AVI media to iTunes format or install MEDIA PLAYER on an iPad and you can load AVI  movies directly.

ie: miss 2 has Madagascar, Lightning McQueen, Thomas and Peppa Pig movies on the iPad to watch in the car/out and about etc
You can stream these from the iPad to the AppleTV with almost 0 latency. Same for any movie file in your iTunes library.

So if you don't want to pay to rent movies - and have them through 'other' means, the AppleTV still works nicely.

If you install XBMC you don't need to convert anything.

In order to use the Apple TV 2 and get the best out of it you really do need a network attached storage device.  That way you donít need a laptop or computer running with Itunes.

The ideal setup is this.
Synology or Qnap (NAS) installed with a torrent downloading program or a Usenet client such as SABnzbd.

You jump on the net and bookmark what shows you wish to download, either via an RSS feed setup or a NZB setup.

The NAS constantly monitors the RSS feed, once it sees something new it downloads it.

Download is completed, the file is uncompressed and then categorised into either a TV show, movie.

The NAS then makes a call to XBMC and says scan for new content. Once it finds the freshly downloaded content it downloads the artwork and updates the menus.

Home, watch and enjoy.

P.S.
Once you have this setup itís almost a set and forget. However you need a certain level of IT knowledge to nail it right.
