looking at Palmer, James Packer and Laughlin Murdoch I can see it requires a degree of abandonment of all fear.
Given the personalities you have included; should the thread be titled "Obtaining Wealth"?

If you have $40m and risk $39m and it goes to shit, you're still a millionaire.

Nowadays I see more value in minimalising needs rather than maximising desires. Anything beyond what it takes to get by is pure gravy.

I think you will find the likes of Packer and Murdoch still bet very, very big. Look at the losses in One.tel, something like $400 million?

You are talking about a lifestyle choice Ash. Money means very little to some people and that's fair enough.

Kinda the point. Minimise everything else, then most of what you got is gravy.

Get rid of the kids, wife, dog, cat, house......keep sports car and Everyday Rewards card for the Knock shop??????

very true, at one stage post kerry, Jamie had to sell a fair bit of property to keep himself buoyant.  He was laughed at initially for his casino strategy but it certainly has paid off in a big way.

It's one thing to inherit wealth; but another thing to hold on to it, and an entirely different thing again to build on it.

My hat is off to James Packer. He inherited great wealth; but transformed the operations away from the press and TV networks of his Grandfather and father and into gambling. Moral considerations about gambling aside, he has done a hell of a good job.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the Murdoch empire when Rupert passes on.

To quote Kerry Packer, "Behind every successful businessman is a crime".

Is there much difference ?

Perhaps in their case....retaining wealth, or maintaining wealth.

If you're happy with what you've got you're a wealthy man.
.....to quote an optimist who didn't make it ...but it's true.

Yes, the GFC hit just as he committed to a very big Casino project. It all turned to shit and he lost a lot of money. Sometimes something completely unexpected comes out of left field and takes you out, despite all the planning and research.
