Study finds alcohol doesn't kill off brain cells

July 10, 2007 12:00am
Article from: The Daily Telegraph

NEW research, to be revealed at a conference of some of the world's top neuroscientists in Cairns today, has found alcohol does not kill off brain cells as always thought.

For years imbibers have been told a big night on the drink wipes out entire sections of human brain cell function with much the same destructive equivalent as a napalm bombing strike.

According to Queensland Brain Institute director Professor Perry Bartlett, this is not true.

There is no evidence drinking alcohol leads directly to the death of brain cells, he said.

"Some of the best studies, done in Italy, show a bottle of wine a night can reduce the risk of dementia in old age," Professor Bartlett said.

In moderation, alcohol has positive benefits for blood vessel health and stroke prevention. And, as an added bonus, new brain cells are generated every day of our lives.

Research by Professor Bartlett and his team has found we all have an inbuilt repair kit replenishing the more than 100 billion cells - or neurons - in our brain.

I'm always up for trying new brews - sadly not all are particularly epic.

Bought a six-pack of "Barefoot Radler" - supposedly brewed specifically for Oz conditions and infused with lemon/lime, and incredibly refreshing...

Yeah - it blows.  One of the worst non-really-weird beers I've tasted.

Yeah, it's another beer-if-you-don't-like-beer. The Monteith's radler is nicer but once again if you want a beery beer this ain't it.

We got them in at work, they gave us a whole bunch to try, its not good at all, same thing with the Miller Chill, and the Carlton Dry Fusion, all shithouse lime and salt infused bird poo.... Rate them up there with Vaginal Backwash (VB) and Crown......

The Knappstein lager from the winery isnt bad, lots of passionfruit etc on the nose, similar style to the Little Creatures Bright ale, but better. Can only have a few before it gets too sweet though, its not a beer you can have a big session on.

The Little Creatures stuff is good, but was better when it first became big and more Mainstream

Proper Murphys irish stout is the fave for me...

Failing that, the Schoefferhoffer clear is a lovely drop

usually a guiness has to suffice in these parts.

I think they have the Shoefferhoffer at my local Belgian - usually too drunk to remember

Not into Guiness - tried a few times but just don't like it.   Used to drink Kilkenny but it's too heavy for more than 1 pint.

Yep, can vouch for that  as well Ash.  Great little brewery.  Got some LC's in the Frudge.  My wife likes it as well.
