hmmm. i'm not necessarily sure tetsuya's the best ... it is expensive, and it's good if you want lots of small, degustation'y things with asiany flavours. Rubbish if you want a 650 gram rib-eye on the bone.

There are heaps of great restaurants in the rocks, plenty that will take walk-in custom if you're keen to go throught the front door that are all cheap and cheerful.

If you're happy with 100-150/head for 3 courses without wines, then around circular key there's Cafe Sydney, Wildfire, Quay etc etc all of which give you an amazing view of the harbour - but you'll need to see if you can get a booking today.

Otherwise, walk around circular quay (near where the ferries go, and there's lots of good places) - one that's semi cheap is City Cafe right on the water at the quay, menu is a big newspaper and they serve a bit of everything. Not too swanky, but good enough food and near everything else for a romantic walk.   :)

Otherwise, Ivy in the city is the current hip spot - fancypants but no views apart from the (other) beautiful people
C'mon, do it!

you've got to be kidding me?!!? out of the 12 courses served only 3 were very good with his signature dish being exceptional. all the others were average at most.

I'd second the Ivy proposition... it was just superb.. and so was the company

it not a matter of whether it is the best or not. everyone goes to restaurants wanting different things. when it comes to the top restaurants, it really all comes down to personal taste.
