I've heard this point in the past, in the case of lifesaving drugs - who are they marketing too? I'd have thought it'd be more pull than push in that case.

The medical profession, they don't get sold to cheaply.

Hit the nail on the head. I have a friend who is a cardiologist of some standing who was paid to give lectures to other Doctors at drug company functions. These would normally be at overseas conferences where he was given first class airfares, 5 star hotel accommodation for him and his wife and a fee. This would happen several times a year.........................big bucks.

It's the cost to develop and get them approved, not the raw materials - that they are charging for.

For every drug that makes it to market there are a large number that don't get there for one reason or another. Each one of those also has a huge cost that needs to be covered by the profits from the drugs that do become successful on the market.

There is another issue emerging as a result of all this patent life changes and Government cuts. The number of new drugs in the R & D pipeline is drying up and there are fewer new drugs making it to market. It's not looking good for ground breaking new treatments in the future.
