Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson has moved out of the mansion he shares with his wife Frances amid claims of an extramarital affair.

The 50-year-old television host and his wife of 18 years are spending time apart by "mutual agreement", the UK's Telegraph newspaper reports.

A source close said the couple needed space as they try to recover from allegations of Clarkson's infidelity.

Clarkson's wife Frances, who is also his manager, has told the newspaper that her husband has bought a flat in Bayswater, in West London near the Top Gear studios, while she will stay at their countryside estate in Oxfordshire.

"We are still together. He will be coming back here," she was quoted as saying.

A source told the Daily Mail the affair claims were putting pressure on his marriage, saying: "I wouldn't assume it's great. He stays in his flat an awful lot, especially when he is editing It is pretty strained."

"He is always at home Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and some of the early part of the week," the source said.

On Saturday, writing in his regular column under the headline "Things really aren't what they used to be", Clarkson said he was struggling with his newfound bachelor lifestyle.

He wrote: "When I moved recently into an unfurnished flat I spent the first evening sitting on the floor, wondering what is essential and what, really, is not. Obviously I'd need a fridge and a cooker.

The father-of-three lamented his difficulties as an undomesticated male, deciding to forgo buying a washing machine and instead take his clothes to a launderette and have someone "in a nylon overall wash them".

The BBC host went on to say how he would definitely need a coffee machine, a Playstation gaming console as well as an internet connection so he can access "some pornography".

Last month Clarkson laughed off claims by British tabloid newspaper The Mirror that he had an affair with 42-year-old Philippa Sage, whom he worked with when the popular motoring show was on tour.

"I'm surprised to find that I'm the new Tiger Woods," Clarkson said in a text to his mother.

And just recently, Clarkson was embroiled in drama with British socialite Jemima Khan, 50, who was rumoured to have taken a gagging order to stop "intimate photos" of herself and Clarkson being published. (Read more: Khan denies intimate Clarkson photos)

The multi-millionaire media personality married Frances in 1993, a year after he divorced his first wife, Alexandra James.

Clarkson ended his weekend column thus: "If you do lose your job and you end up living in a barn, be happy, because you'll be having a much better life than me."
