Hello all,

One of my major assessment tasks this year is to write an essay on a topic of my choice, the topic I chose is 'The Melbourne Grand Prix is a waste of money.' Assess the arguments for and against the Albert Park Grand Prix

It would be greatly appreciated if any of the forum's members could express their opinion towards the event, be it pros or cons, any information provided would be great!

Thankyou!!!

The whole world regard it as one of the very best grand prix. The location and resources are superb.

The public transport system is brilliant, and the fact its free for the event superb.

The support acts are better than most other gp too.

I really dont see the negatives at all.

I have no problem with paying my tax when I get benefits like the gp.

The gp saved the park from being a rundown wasteland.

Tangible vs. in-tangible. Apparently the VIC Govt. loses something like $50m per year on supporting the Grand Prix. This is the tangible aspect. The in-tangible part is the extra dollars through tourism, hospitality and all the other parts that aren't so easily measured.

I am sure you could easily BS up some numbers to make it work either way.

Is "loses" the right word?

Spends, or invests would seem more appropriate.

No, as they apparently 'spend' or 'invest' a lot more than $50m. Not sure if these are the right $$$ but the premise of the argument is that it makes a loss and is the loss worth it.

A report was written by Adelaide University on the impact of the 1985 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix. You might like to have a read of that.

But if a perceived loss is "worth it", it must surely be considered to have an ultimate return?

So, "invest" is more appropriate than spend?????

Otherwise, if the loss was pure loss, why do it at all?

Correct. That is what his paper/debate is about.
