I always get a laugh how Melbourne gets a vote, for what?

traffic ,ugly modern buildings, ugly people and crap food.

In a nutshell its a shit hole.

I like Melbourne, but I am constantly reminded by work colleagues how much better Melbourne is than Sydney. The reasons always are intangible:

1. The people are nicer (all people in Sydney are stuck up apparently)
2. The coffee is better
3. The food is better
4. Traffic is better
5. There is more culture (my all-time favourite)
6. There are nice lane-ways in the city

I've never understood some of the bitterness I've heard from Melbourne people over the years as it's usually only directed at Sydney and never any other Australian city.

I find the people around my area at best rude bogans on the whole, who have destroyed a once nice area with there new shit wholes with no regard for culture.
Coffee I'm not into milk coffee and prefer my own at home which is better and away from all the scrubs in the shops on there iphones.
Culture what culture the the shit hole is 160 years old.
traffic is a nightmare can't wait for petrol to be 3 dollars a litre and get the fuckers off the road.
CBD laneways yes if you can find a car park.
My area is full of bogan woman in skin tights,TTB's few are good looking and most have legs covered in child bearing varcause veins.

Cities are never finished.

OK, Pompeii is an exception. :p

That's sort of still going....and the population seems ageless.

+1

I share my time between Sydney and Melbourne and work in both locations.

I hear the same list of "reasons" on the Melbourne end daily!

Yet no one in Sydney cares enough to get into the pettiness.

In saying all this Sydney will always be home.

this lonely planet list is different every year, otherwise no one would buy the book each year if it were the same
each year an Australian city is featured
Previous cities to have been featured according to something I read elsewhere are Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart and Newcastle.
Yep, even Canberra.
