A question to those whom may know.......

Penfolds Grange.

The label reads,

Vintage:         1970                    Bottled:       1971

So is it a 1970 Grange, or a 1971 Grange?

Do they number the bottles by the vintage date or the bottling date?

The Vintage is the harvest year. In this case 1970.

The wine is classed as a 1970 vintage for this bottle(so a 70 Grange).

But both dates are important, Grange is normally aged for 18 months in the barrels. So a 1970 vintage could also have a bottled date of 1972 but I have never seen any with this combo.
