what does it matter who owns what?

raise the money or run at what you can afford...

EXACTLY! It's a COMPETITION! Life's not fair! Why should the succesful be penalised for the dopes?
You make something idiotproof, they'll make a better idiot.

yes in a-league.

edit: makes me think it's more of a problem in soccer. since soccer is more of an international sport than rugby, seems that salary caps prevent us from "developing" soccer so that it's in line with soccer on the international scale.

You'll tend to only find salary caps in countries that have a small population, purely due to the fact that we cannot produce enough elite players to evenly share between all teams. It's make for a more even (and usually a more exciting) competition. It's like the F1, if the team can spend exorbinant amounts of money and continual win, then first you see audience numbers drop as it becomes boring, and then you will find the other teams will pull out as there will be no point playing for low audience numbers. As much as we'd all like to say we play the game cause we want to, it's about winning, and if you don't win you don't get money, and you go down a very black hole very quickly.

yeah, but here in this country the exposure/tv is pretty much the same for all teams, so I don't see why any teams would gain more or less of the available sponsorship/support money????

it'd equal out or there abouts IMO.

If you made it that they could only spend the money that they gained from sponsorship/tv rights then not a problem. But for example Melbourne Storm is owned by News Limited that have a lot deeper pockets then others.

good for them. They wouldn't have earned the access to the extra funds if they weren't good enough.

News Limited are in it for the money not the football. It's not the Melbourne promoting themselves better.

Also don't get me wrong I see the good and bad in the caps, but just love watching sport so the less clubs/competitions that go bankrupt the better
