Does anyone know why we went to coins for the lower denominations?

They're just a pain in the arse to me.  I didn't even have a wallet back in the 80's - let alone money to carry - but what was it like back then compared to now?

I'm just so sick of loose change, anything $2 and under is completely useless because it takes up so much space and weight... at least a note would just make your wallet look fatter in a good way.

it's not like we haven't ALWAYS had coins.

we had one and two cent coins. they're gone! you should be grateful.

soon 5 cents will be gone, as that will be worthless too.

it all evens up.

Yeah but it's been a long time since anything under $1 was worth diddly.

What was it like back in the late 80's when the $2 coin came out?

For me it was basically nothing, except from late 1988 I got a single coin instead of a note for my weekly chores.  Nowadays though it just takes up space.

Brought this up because I can't close my change drawer anymore... something inside me just thought if I keep putting it in there it will just be empty oneday or something. :?

I made a thread like this on fchat years ago posting my change collection every few months when I cashed it in and someone complained that I didn't have anything better to do!  I just seriously don't know what to do with all this change apart from bank it!!!

I didn't either, but one of my ingrained 1988 memories (aside from playing 1942 and Double Dragon) is a much wiser older step-bro coming up and showing us the diference between a $1 and $2 coin... by dropping them on slate.

The $1 coin went ching boing bounce ching dang choing dong woka woka woka woooo and settled to rest... the $2 coin went clunk - boomp - choonk - and settled to rest.

Hmm, actually it didn't mean anything come to think of it, it's still money.

Sounds like you're going the Ferrari way...  you don't necessarily want your dollar to have more power, you just want it to be lighter so its more efficient.  That right?   :D

In the early 80's the Aussie dollar was like $1.20 US then they floated the dollar which was fine but then the brains made it out of metal. We all know that metal sinks, so it was a pretty stupid move to make it from metals after floating the bloody thing.
