The way Musk described it was kind of believable. Went something like:

Humans design Robot to pick up rubbish. Robot thinks there must be a better way  :scratchchin:
Robot asks itself why do we have rubbish? Answer: Humans. Obvious solution: Get rid of humans. No more rubbish

He also doubted that the fail safe "never take a human life" would be the saviour and that if the robots had connection to the web there would be contagion.

A bit out there; but it makes you wonder.

Good luck to everyone with a robot Vacuum!

In order for a machine to “think”. it needs free will and consciousness. This is a long long way off if it will ever happen.

In order for a robot to clean up rubbish, we have to tell it what is rubbish and what is not. We also have to tell it how to pick up the rubbish and what to do with it.

For a robot to “think” to itself that there must be a better way is not possible without it being programed to do this. Free will and consciousness can not be programmed.

I take a Zen approach to this, if I was to follow a religion at all it would be Buddhism. In order for a machine to have consciousness it must have a soul. Yes there has been a lot progress made but it is with some tricky programming, not from a machine being self aware.

Mondi already has a machine that will suck at the flick of a switch.

A sensible view.

This is impressive technology in the sense of the way it moves, but is it actually thinking?
Of course not. Unless you believe an automatic door also "thinks".

It doesn't think in the real sense of the word at all.
Just because it has a vague resemblance to an animal doesn't mean shit.

And as for this indicating the imminent taking over of the world by robots?
Some people need to take a Bex and have a lie down.

Taking over the world may not mean in the traditional way. It starts with replacement of humans with "dumb" machines and then slowly moves up the "intelligence" chain. The iRobot vacuum machine is dumb but its replaced dumber machines (vacuum cleaners operated by humans), the automatic passport control at the airport - again replaced humans, the auto checkout at Coles and so on.

Once the "Internet of things" gets further and further connected it wont be long before AI could infiltrate these billions of IP connected devices and start to control them.

It starts with replacement of humans's mundane tasks and moves up from there.

BTW machines do have souls but one needs to understand the 4th, 5th 6th etc dimensions to appreciate this :)

Yeah, I see the point here. Already seeing the dumbing down of many demographics in society, and if smart phones are anything to go by, machines are already controlling us.

You should see the 10th dimension, it’s run by a race of Mondi’s.

Anyway, it will be up to the Alien race that is studying us at the moment, they could try out an experiment to see how we would handle such a problem as this or introduce some new technology that starts the ball rolling. They did give us Velcro after all......................

It also comes down to what you would rather the apocalypse to involve, Zombies or killer robots!!!!!!!!!!   :scared:
