Hi all,

I've been lurking around these forums for years now - but not joined until tonight. It was either join AE, or fill in the census form.

Now that the census site has sh*t itself....my hand is forced!

What I am hoping to draw a bit of debate on is the following question;

'If you were to go to the UK for just over a year, and you were permitted to own a car there and import it to Aus as a personal import - what would you buy? If it was simply to make money...would your choice differ than if it was to enjoy the car?'

I ask because myself and 2 friends have secured T1 Visas for the UK, and we fully intend to make the most of the opportunity by buying and returning the best cars we can.

My suggestion is a Porsche 928 GTS, but the others seem to think that a Porsche 996 GT3 offers the best price differential between the UK and here (conscious of many other factors, such as time, depreciation / appreciation, exchange rates, etc).

Simple answer really.  Spend the most that you can afford. Buy something that is rare on the roads here in Oz. Buy something that you are going to drive and enjoy and not just store. Has to be dry weather driven.

I worked out that you either need to buy something expensive ie Porsche, top end Merc, or something you can't get here ie Clio V6. Nothing else makes sense by the time you factor in shippingredients and the resale on import cars.

The question would be what is your budget?

If money was not a problem I would go for rarity supercars.... They seem to be climbing each year and are solid investments.

list include:

Diablo, countach, F40 etc

budget up to about 250k including eventual taxes and freight upon return to aus. clio v6 unlikely to pass the hurdle.....we'd be aiming for a minimum 40k net profit on whichever car. problem with rarity is that you could be sitting on the car for a very long time. as opposed to....for instance....an E63....or S65.....or M4 convertible most of which should be easier to move. however....the risk we face with newer cars is that they'll depreciate in the interim.....whereas a 993 or 996....or even a 928 GTS should appreciate over this timeframe. not worth doing cars like ferrari 360 or 355....they're better off being sent from aus to uk still.
