Well, for example, Joe Viola had a mansion in Doncaster with, so I'm told, lots of marble, granite and gold leaf banisters. You don't get that on (today's equivalent) of $50kpa!

I've heard stories of car collections and houses of others too. Apparently all you need is a silver tongue and well heeled clients.

It's fair to say I doubt he made his wealth from selling parts and Labour.

I don't know anyone at my age (23) making that sort of cash, I guess you won't know your potential until you try it out

That's the spirit.

Name a mechanic, and what you think their take home pay might be per year....
Francois started his own shop ten years ago, because the thought getting paid $23k/month by Barbagallo's to run the Ferrari/Lambo/Maserati/Lotus workshop wasn't enough.

If you are not where you want to be financially and you don't work in a way where you can control your income, focus instead on a career change. But do it before you have kids if you can - those little buggers can kill an appetite for risk, and no risk = no reward.

This is where I'm struggling.

It's easy to follow the path that's been paved.  In my case, 4 tertiary qualifications.  Not exactly by choice - just picked a degree for the sake of going to uni after high school, couldn't get a job, so did another degree, then the two that followed were required in the profession I work in.  Anyway, it doesn't pay well.  It's not just the money that is the issue, it's I feel like I'm stuck in a rut.

Although the good thing with an accounting degree the principles can be used just about anywhere.

I often think about doing my own thing.  My mates and I constantly talk about it, mates in a similar boat.  The problem is how to find something to make a go of it.

It's fair to say you'd be wrong to doubt it.

I doubt that.

Parts and Labour sales does not make wealth.

Now, if you start buying and selling cars etc, then maybe.

But my question was... Name a mechanic.....

Funny this came up, as I'd been thinking while reading the varying directions in the discussion, that (for example) App / Neru could do a lot worse than begging you or Carl for an apprenticeship. It seems there's never been adequate availability of trusted mechanics for exotic machinery - and that it'd be a good way to earn a solid living if you chose to work largely with your own hands - and in interesting way to build more wealth if you did have a skill for sales, managing a team and forming relationships to distribute product.

From my perspective, young guys could do a lot worse than this is a starting point if their current jobs are a 'rut'.

C'mon, do it!

I think I'm too fussy to train apprentices, whilst being a small business.

The efficiency needs to be higher, never mind the customers querying and begrudging "boys/rookies" working on their cars.

Large businesses can afford some slack periods/areas, so apprentices are better absorbed there.

Carl brings OCD to new levels even I can't achieve. Lining up screwdrivers, large to small, arranging parts in symmetrical patterns for photography.... Apprentices would struggle to be accepted!

No, I'll stick to using well established accomplished professionals as sub contractors, thanks all the same.

Another young guy who is 23 and has been in real estate for 4 years, that works for an Agent I know in SA will make $500,000 this year.

P.H. & T.H.? T.H. will kill it this year.....I have only heard great things about him, with still so much more potential!
