I just handhold an LED panel inside an empty softbox.

Nice!

All the photos are cropped pretty tight around the cars, I think I'd like them better if they had more space around them.

Great angle for the Scirocco

Your kind words are much appreciated. :)

None of them are cropped, they were framed this way. Having said that, I might try playing with my framing a bit, and see how I like it. I'm just a bit sensitive about stealing any focus from the cars...

Unless the shots are for a tyre company I would be turning the wheels the other way. Or straight.

Nice work though.

Your lighting is good but maybe try some different locations. And the framing could be a little wider.

Keep it up

Thanks for the feedback, folks.

I'll work on my framing, since it seems to be a recurring comment.

Regarding locations, it's one of my biggest frustrations.
Because I do light painting, I have two very important technical requirements from a location :
- A 5sec f/11 ISO100 exposure needs to produce a near-black frame, especially on the car itself.
- I need to be as far away from sodium vapour street lights (the deep orange ones) as possible, they're a nightmare to deal with in post.

These two aspects have led to me having done tons of location scouting, looking for a good spot with this type of friendly ambient night lighting.

I've recently started using a new, outdoor location (under, or around, the Bolte Bridge, in the Melbourne CBD).

But I'm always looking. :)

What about using a gradual ND filter, you could work in some lighter locations then.

And yes, those yellow streetlights are horrible, I don't think white balance can do much for that :(

how would that go with light painting?

Hehe - no, a GND would be the worse option. A simple ND would help defeat the ambient, but I'd need a stronger light source of my own to get through. That's not possible, within the handheld, battery powered, affordable range options.

Trust me, I've thought the technical side of it through very thoroughly. :)

Now it's up to finding more locations.

And yes, the sodium vapour lights emit at a specific frequency, which means you can't WB them out. I've got a couple of ways to deal with them, if I need to, but best to be avoided.
:)
