Tips on settings etc?

I haven't done a single bit of Googling yet, just 5 mins futzing around with the camera manual mode - got this:

...but I know there's a lot better to be done - even with my dinky toy camera.

What settings?

ISO, f-stop, that thing that means time, etc?

F/10 or f/11, a bloody good tripod, 100-200 ISO is what i generally use for night cityscapes

Ok above was shot with 80 ISO, f/3.5, 5 second exposure, on a table with lots of beer spilt on it.

f10/11 will give you a really long depth of field, so more things in the photo are sharp. Nothing wrong with 80 ISO, not all cameras shoot at that sort of ISO, lowest mine go is 100. Steal Dave's Bridge support and use that to take the photo, i swear his tripod could hold up the Sydney harbor bridge if it had to!

Ok this set was taken (before above advice - my pooter is from 2004 :? ) at ISO 80, f/4.0, 15 sec exposure, and the Picasa stuff says focal length 6.0mm with 35mm equivalent = 38mm.

Oh, and I stood back to give a different perspective of the balcony itself.

Sound about right.   Exposure depends on how much light there is - whether artificial lighting, light reflected from clouds, moonlight or last bits of sunlight at sunset.   E.g. When taking fireworks shots, 6-10 secs is good.  But when taking a direct shot of a full moon, I use 1/1000 or similar.

Perfect Mondi!  I was going to make the point about the smaller aperture creating those starry lens flares. So go for something like F22 if you want the "star" really exagerated like this fine example.

Offline dkabab

and the number of star flares or whatever you want to call them, is directly related to the number of blades in the aperature diaphram of the lens... this cant be done on a digital non slr
