A CAR detailer's "highly amateurish" plan to steal a luxury car from a showroom and swap it for a Porsche was destined to fail, a District Court judge said today.

Sean Christopher Cooke, 21, of Seaton, pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one count of attempted deception.

In sentencing, Judge Peter Herriman said Cooke took the Lexus car to the Modbury Transport Office in December 2006 and had its registration transferred into his name.

He then drove it another dealership and unsuccessfully tried to swap it for a Porsche.

After several more attempts to sell the car, police were called and he was arrested.

Just over a year later, Cooke tried his luck again by attempting to steal a car at Murray Bridge after taking it on a test drive.

Today, Judge Herriman said Cooke had been encouraged by friends to commit the offences.

"It had been suggested by others to do this... you had been talking about doing this for some time," he said.

"It was undoubtedly planned and willful but was highly amatuerish and you were destined to be apprehended."

He said he questioned claims Cooke had rehabilitated, given the Murray Bridge theft and evidence he stole shoes from a department store in June 2008.

Cooke was given a two-year jail sentence which was suspended provided he enter a $500 three-year good behaviour bond.

He was also required to remain under the supervision of a community service officer for one year and submit to drug testing when requested.
