off of a 2009 and onwards 997 (when they switched to the better looking LED set up) fit onto say an 07-08 model ??

the series 2 997 (from 2009 onwards) have a different shape of rear lights hence unless you are willing to change your rear bumpers, it is unlikely to fit. If you are after the LED looking rear lights, there are several options available including heaps on Fleabay but supposedly the Dectane units are the most reliable and easy to fit.
Forgiveness is easier to achieve than permission!

I got the all-red rear lights from the US for my 08 turbo. Looks much better than the white/red split rears on the standard Aus edition. Might be something to also consider.

This one below is the 2009 model that fits 05-07 997. All LED and available in red or white/red.

yeah depends on the colour of the car I think, on black it would look very nice.
