Got to love when Geneva comes around!

Absolutely love this design, simple like the Carrera GT. Just hope they decide to build it, and in RHD this time.

why can't porsche make the cayman look like this?
or the boxster?

I think the design would be more suitable for a Boxtser/Cayman level car than a supercar.  It looks great but doesn't look outrageous or aggressive enough to be a supercar.  That said, the Carrera GT never looked as good as its supercar rivals (Enzo, SLR, Zonda etc) and the design now looks a bit dated compared to those cars.  I think that this new design suffers the same problem.

Porsche 918 Spyder May Cost $630,000, Top Carrera GT
By Andreas Cremer

July 12 (Bloomberg) -- Porsche AG may price the 918 Spyder, which soars to 100 kilometers an hour in 3.2 seconds, at 500,000 euros ($630,000), topping the Carrera GT as its costliest model, according to two people with direct knowledge of the plan.

At least 2,000 individuals have put in non-binding expressions of interest for the supercar, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is confidential. The 918 Spyder is one of three hybrid models Porsche presented at the Geneva auto show in March.

Demand for luxury cars is returning as Wall Street firms add jobs for the first time in two years and offer guaranteed payouts to attract top bankers. While Porsche hasn’t decided whether and when it will begin production of the model, at that price the 918 Spyder would top the 453,000-euro Carrera GT. Fewer than 1,500 of that model were built between 2003 and 2006.

“The Spyder will become Porsche’s new supercar showpiece project,” said Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch- Gladbach, Germany. “It unites Porsche’s high-performance engineering with intelligent drive technology.”

Porsche, which is merging with Volkswagen AG, needs at least 1,000 sales pledges to approve limited production of the car, development chief Wolfgang Duerheimer said in an April 24 interview. If only half of those who signed up eventually bought the car, Porsche stands to reap 500 million euros in revenue.

Or you can spend a whole lot less and get a standard Turbo with the same acceleration. Sadly, low fuel consumption isn't really sexy yet.

Porsche 918 Spyder gets green light

Porsche's eco-friendly hypercar has been given the green light! In a shock announcement, the German firm's board of directors has revealed that a production model based on the 918 Spyder concept car will enter series production - in response to an overwhelming reaction from the public.

Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG, said; “Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts.”

The concept car uses a mid-mounted 493bhp 3.4-litre V8 derived from the firm's Spyder racing car, capable of revving to 9,200rpm, plus two electric motors, which add a further 160kW (215bhp). Around town, an E-drive mode allows the car to travel up to 16 miles on electricity alone before switching to Hybrid mode, which uses both power sources in moderation. This gives claimed economy figures of 94mpg and 70g/km of CO2.

There are no details yet on the powertrain for the production 918, but the announcement is yet another sign of Porsche's commitment to electric and hybrid power. It recently announced that an electric Boxster is under development and we've already driven the GT3 R Hybrid race car.

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Video
By Mark Kleis

Porsche’s now famous 918 Spyder has landed on U.S. soil for the festivities in Pebble Beach this past week – and luckily for us they brought a high-definition camera crew along for the trip.

The video discusses the importance of the car to the brand, and shows some simply beautiful footage of the car with a great musical background. In fact, Michael Mauer, Porsche design chief, goes as far as to say that the 918 symbolizes that the Porsche brand as a whole even has a future as it is an answer to the “environmental discussion.”

At this exact moment, deep in the loins of a Stuttgart factory, some Porsche engineers are sharpening their scalpels: the 918 Spyder is now available to order.

The show-stopping concept car which delivered a haymaker to the world's preconceived hybrid ideas will commence production on September 18, 2013. To ensure its exclusivity, just 918 models will be produced, with first customer deliveries expected in November that year.

Porsche tells us the production version will be based on a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic monocoque with removable roof panels, while underneath that beautiful body lies the dolphin-friendly tech of Porsche's future.

A high-revving 4.0-litre 500bhp V8 will partner two electric motors - one each on the front and rear axles - offering a total of 218bhp, with a seven-speed PDK box administering the green horsepower effectively.

And it will be mighty effective. Porsche reckons the plug-in hybrid 918 will hit 62mph from rest in 3.2 seconds, top out at over 199mph and will lap the 'Ring in seven minutes and 30 seconds - 2 seconds faster than the Carrera GT. Using just electricity, it'll top out at 94mph, in silence, probably.

Here's the astonishing part: 94mpg and 70g/km of CO2. The future tastes fruity...

A lithium-ion liquid-cooled battery will power the electric motors, and charged from a regular plug will offer an all-electric range of 16 miles. Charge time is around three hours, or the first act of a Bollywood film.

Should your burning desire for everything 918 Spyder exceed the brain cells responsible for ‘reason', Porsche is offering Spyder customers the exclusive opportunity to purchase a limited edition 911 Turbo S ‘918 Spyder edition'. Basically a Turbo with acid green trimmings and some badges, limited to 918 models.

And now, friends, the difficult part. Prices for the 918 Spyder start from £565,000, plus VAT - pushing total price to an eye-watering £678,000. Makes the £125,865 918-badged 911 Turbo S look a bargain.
