I have a manual car in my 308 GTB; but since it has been out of action for 18mths plus, maybe you are right

You say that, but for me so far below 5000rpm the ratios are absolutely fine.  No doubt it is different above 5k.  But overall the way the box feels is absolutely fantastic.
