I can't see what other choices you have. Yes, $599 is a silly price but then you'll have an integrated satnav. A tomtom works better but clutters the cabin and is a security risk.

If a Tom Tom works better then the Porsche product, the Porsche product must be pretty lousy.

Tom Tom sent me into the entrance of Crown Casino once when I was trying to get from one place to another quickly.

The best sat nav I ever had was in the Merc, faultless.

Tom Tom seems ok now though, just stick it in the glove nox when not in use, these things arent used very often.

Maybe it works OK in town, but all the European brands seem to use the same data discs - and give unknown railway sidings the same status as big towns. My 2 Benzes have satnavs that are way inferior to TomTom.

dumb comment. out of interest, what do you drive?

i have a tom tom. as the car has a sat nav screen in it I'd rather have it working. not wanting to pay $599 for the maps is not being a tight arse. i've just paid $20k to bring it in to the country.

if someone has brought in a 997 and they've overcome the issue please let me know. if you feel compelled to write a stupid comment about why i should not try to save some money, because presumably because you always pay full price for everything, hey, go ahead......

Lexus RX350 daily driver, occassional weekend 996TT FD RX7 -  but dont see what difference that would make.

As for the discs what you are asking is to bypass porsche in getting the discs which is either by torrents ( illegal) or getting one off someone else.

If you can afford the car you can afford the disc.

If you cant justify the $599 buy a tomtom

simple

Hard to argue with this logic.

How much research have you done into this? Are you sure it is just simply loading new maps? With most other makes you also need to code the car with a diagnostics computer correctly to change the region of the car before the maps will work anyway.

Unless Porsche is different from most other Euuro cars it won't be a simple load disc and download new maps, should be more involved (and expensive) than that.

Also Dodger, Merc GPS is ok, but in Australia it lacks a lot of information. Try a Merc GPS in Germany and it shows you EVERYTHING.

Tom tom is the way to go in Aus if you want it updated all the time.
You can say I'm wrong, but my garage doesn't agree with that statement!!!

thanks for the replies everyone

amgsl your comment that if i can afford the car i can afford the discs is none of your business. why are you making this comment? I've asked for an answer to a legitimate question. Of course i can afford to buy them, i just think $599 is a complete rip off when i've in effect already bought the car with maps - uk. i've always serviced the car at Porsche so the company has made plenty pf money out of me and i don't mind paying porsche prices for parts...but $599 for a set of digital maps is over the top.

similarly asking what I drive was also none of your business

if you think $599 is a rip off -  dont buy it, get a tomtom instead -  problem solved

furthermore, i believe sensis owns the rights to GPS maps in Australia and charge exorbitant rates for their use -  so it may not just be a porsche AUSTRALIA issue

for the second time; i have a tom tom, i still think 599 is a rip off so i'm looking for alternatives.

there is a difference between me asking you what you drive and you proffering to me your bonehead opinions....can you work it out amgsl - probably not, because it requires an understanding of basic manners.
