A MAN is being questioned by police after he was caught driving at 300km/h on a country road - and stalled doing a U-turn at a road block.

The high-speed drama occurred in the Margaret River region of Western Australia.

A man, 30, is helping police with their inquiries.

A driver's lost his Porsche, after a high speed police chase along a notorious highway south of Perth.

Officers say they were forced to pull the keys from the high powered car, as its driver tried to escape arrest.

The Porsche Boxter reached estimated speeds of 300 kilometres on hour.

The driver made it from Australind to Herron, a trip that usually takes 45 minutes.

The high speed joyride was eventually cut short.

When the driver realised he was being tailed by police, he slowed down to the speed limit, and was pulled over.

But as officers approached the driver's window, he allegedly attempted a u-turn to escape, spinning the silver sports car 360 degrees and stalling.

It was long enough for a quick-thinking officer to rip the keys from the ignition.

The 31 year old was arrested. He's been charged with assaulting police, aggravated wreckless driving and drink driving.

WA Driver held over '300km/h trip'

POLICE have charged a WA man with reckless driving and impounded his Porsche but played down a report he had been observed speeding at 300km/h.

The 31 year-old man from Margaret River had been driving a silver Porsche at an estimated 300km/h  on the Old Coast Road south of Mandurah, Channel Seven reported tonight.

Police tonight said the reported 300km/h speed was unlikely - and perhaps out of reach of the Porsche.

It is understood the figure might have arisen from an estimate made by police seeking to apprehend the driver, who initially was wrongly suspected to have stolen the vehicle.

Senior Constable Mark Burton, of Mandurah Police, said he had responded to a call from Bunbury police to look out for a Porsche travelling north at high speed that was believed stolen.

He said the vehicle turned out not to have been stolen and was not speeding when he intercepted it this afternoon at Herron, south of Mandurah.

"It stopped, but when my passenger alighted and went up to the driver, he put his foot on the accelerator hard and tried to do a U-turn and go the other way," Const. Burton alleged.

He said the car had stalled and while the driver was attempting to restart it, his fellow officer had taken the keys, sparking an altercation.

"We have no idea how fast he was going," Const. Burton said.

"It appears he has made it from Australind to Herron in 25-30 minutes so he was obviously going pretty good."

The driver of the vehicle had been charged with offences including drink driving, failing to stop, reckless driving and assaulting a public officer.

The Porsche had been impounded for seven days - for the "burnout" performed during the U-turn, Const. Burton said.

It just leaves you going WTF...  I mean 99% of the people who hear this story will have done so by the broadcast on teevee which reported the whole 300kph police chase with a 360 spin and 10 minutes of assault/struggle, and that will be it.

I was watching the video on Perthnow.com.au of the parked Porsche and the cops behind it after he had been arrested and it was actually a 1999 911 996 Carrera. The media just said it was a Boxster because they're clowns
