Photography / Fireworks
« on: Fri, 06 Nov, 2009 - 21:47 »
Guy Fawkes night last night and there have been fireworks going off all week. There was an official display directly infront of my flat in Southwark Park. Never shot fireworks before so decided to have a go.

Thoughts?

Keep in mind that nothing has been done to the shots... Straight from camera. :)

Driving / Spontaneous Tunnel Run
« on: Mon, 02 Nov, 2009 - 20:35 »
Hungover on Sat night, ducked out for McDs and spotted some Tunnel Runners we knew just starting to gather at Westferry Circus.
Eat then then headed into the City to wait for them while they did Rotherhithe and Tooley Street.

While waiting did a run through Puddledock in my flatmate's recently remapped MR2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q6Cl4n1qp0

Sorry for shitness of video. Didn't have time to get a proper camera. Just used my phone.

Group finnally caught us up. There was about 30-40 cars. Mainly TVRs. Few Lambos, couple of Fez'. Ultima Can-Am is just awesome....
There were a bunch of guys from Holland that came over for the run aswell... Everyone was really into the spirit of haloween with most people dressing up or decking out their car...

Did Puddledock a few times then moved on to Russell Square. The rest of the group went for a pose down Picadilly, The Mall etc then headed out west. We left them at Russell Square and headed back east (finding a new tunnel on the way.... Never seen it before...).
Left for McDs around 2345, got home around 0330.... :D

Couple of pics from Puddledock. Again only my phone with me...

Jaguar For Sale / Good weekend....
« on: Mon, 12 Oct, 2009 - 20:24 »
Caught up with a BASE jumping mate on Friday afternoon.
What started as a catch up beer turned into planning a BASE and climbing expedition in London for Sat night...

Started with a 200ft antenna in east London for a practice jump or 2 for him.
After doing very high (1000ft+) cliffs in Switzerland and Italy a lot latley, it is time to get back into the urban low stuff... Fairly easy climb, although carrying a rig hinders you (alot!) and my arms were fucked from it (I don't know how the US guys do 1500ft+ antennas...). Threw on a harness and tied myself to the tower. There was a railing but it was kind of windy up there so just to be safe.

My mate geared up with rig no1, got all ready to jump off something that is waaaay too fucking low...
I PCA'd him, which is when I hold onto the small pilot chute and I pull out the canopy.
Basically, if I fuck up, extremely high chance he'll be leaving in a body bag.

Jump went fine although I was shaking non-stop...
He managed to land right next to the only obstacle in the entire (and big) landing area.
Neither of us noticed a car had pulled up right near the tower just as he was about to jump... They didn't notice anything though and drove off while he was under canopy.

While he was stashing that rig, I was checking the other rig that I carried up. I took a few photos of the view.

City Airport on the left with Canary Wharf in the background.

He climbed back up for jump no2. Quick breather, then gear up. I knew exactly what I was doing so prep was quicker this time. PCA again with no problems, about a 5 second canopy ride again. Landing no problem (well no screams of pain...), so I pack up harness etc and start climbing back down. Jump the (very spikey!) 9ft fence and stroll back to the car, with both of us on a massive high.

Trip to maccas for some energy at only around 0030 on the way back to the city as the night is far from over.
Drive into the City and try and find somewhere to park (fucken nightmare!).
Eventually find a spot (directly under a building we'd previously done) and gear up with cameras this time.
Long scout of Heron Tower which is high on the list of things to do. Decided it was a no go as it was just far too busy around the area. So move onto building no2 a few blocks away.

Long wait for the streets to clear as the bars were at kicking out time. Found a couple of spare, empty street seconds and while next to a sleeping security guard's car, up and over the 7ft hoardings.
Mate went in no probs, I was halfway up when the piece of wood I was holding snapped off and I landed on my feet with the wood in hand and my hand cut... Oops. Waited 5 min and after a quick check for no people, in I went no problems.

Now was time to be as quiet as possible. Made it up a few floors then just took the stairs to the top. Building is only about 15 floors to top.

Hmm. Problem. We were on the south end of the building and wanted to ge to the north... getting there involved balancing along the girders with a 2 storey fall if you lose your balance... Nooo problemo.
Was pretty easy though and got to north quickly. Got cameras out, had a climb up higher onto the roof girders to check for photo spots. Spent ages taking photos.

Was about 0430 when we decided to leave and after a close encounter with a security guard on an adjacent building (he went onto the roof to take a piss about 5m directly infront of us... ) we headed down.

Got out with abit more wood snapping (not me this time... ) at around 5am. Quick check out of HT again to see if it any quieter then back to the car.

Got home at 530am and straight to bed.

Another good night. First antenna, first PCA, 5th and 6th jump I've been with, another building in the City. Well happy even if I'm still dead tired and my hand is getting slightly infected.

Couple of City pics

Jaguar For Sale / One less Dino

Don't post them anywhere else!

This happened to my dino back in June. Just settled with insurers and sadly the car has been written off as Cat B and will be crushed.

The fire was caused due to the age of the petrol hoses. They looked fine but very like blotting paper when investigated. Luckily my friend had borrowed the car as otherwise it would have been in my garage parked under the F40.....

Think i'm done with classic road cars now.Too slow and too much hassle. Hopefully bad luck over as within 2 weeks I had 1 blown engine, one fire and one smashed 911.

On bright side got nice cheque towards something newer.

Racing / Ben Collins in Bathurst 1000

SOME say he is the anonymous driver called "the Stig" on popular motoring show Top Gear. All we know is he's competing in this year's V8 Supercar endurance races.

Jack Daniel's Racing announced English endurance racing specialist Ben Collins will pair up with veteran Nathan Pretty in the team's No. 15 Holden for the annual endurance races at Bathurst and Phillip Island.

Collins, a professional stunt driver, has long been rumoured to be the Stig, with English newspaper The Telegraph claiming he had mistakenly outed himself in January.

The show fiercely guards the identity of the Stig and it's believed Collins could be sacked if he did admit he was the popular character.

The first Stig, stunt driver Perry McCarthy, lost the job after outing himself in his book Flat Out, Flat Broke, published in 2002.

Known as "Black Stig", McCarthy role on the show ended with his driving off the end of an aircraft carrier.

He was replaced with the current Stig - "White Stig" - who was recently "outed" by show host Jeremy Clarkson as former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher.

However, the blaze of publicity surrounding the outing, as well as Clarkson's penchant for theatrics, failed to convince many - if any - viewers that Schumacher was the mystery man in white.

Regardless of his secret identity, Collins - who worked as stunt driver on the latest James Bond movie Quantum of Solace - comes to Australia with extensive racing experience.

Among the 34-year-old's achievements are testing sessions with Formula One team Ascari and the American Red Bull NASCAR team.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to race in V8 Supercars with Jack Daniel's Racing," Collins said.

"Phillip Island and Bathurst are two circuits that every driver would love to get the chance to race on, especially Bathurst, which is such a famous race.

"I drove a Holden V8 Supercar earlier this year and these cars are sensational. They're very demanding and the level of talent and professionalism in this category is very high."

This year's endurance races begin with the Phillip Island 500 from September 11-13 before the Bathurst 1000 is held from October 8-11.
