The pace car didn't pull off the track for the rolling start in the race

what a glorious stuff up!

But.....

the gap to the SC was big enough that the leaders pulled a gap to over the following GT2 cars briefly, BEFORE they caught the safety car... then the 2nd and 3rd row of cars had to back off again in order to not pass the actual leader before the control line... this is what caused the pile up...

So I guess the answer to blame lies in why the leader was caught... did he not accelerate as fully as the rest 'cos he made a bad start, or because he saw the safety car, but if so, he was the ONLY one!

What a mess.

This incident took out two of the GT title competitors - Prospeed and the #77 Felbermayr and effectively ended the chances of both IMSA Matmut Porsches and the Jota Aston Martin.

Rumour from the Internet, from people who should know, like our friends at PlaneLeMans have mentioned on Twitter feeds that to help these teams and prevent a revolt (and consequently small grids for remaining LMS rounds) that the best four scores from five rounds will be counted for the GT classes. We hope this happens and will keep you updated.

In any case, this is probably the craziest accident we have seen for quite some time, and yes, that includes race 2 & 3 from the Australian GT Championship from Albert Park in 2010.
