A NEW car race through the streets of Port Adelaide could be held as soon as this year and attract up to 20,000 people under plans by a prominent motorsport event organiser.

Hobart-based Stuart Benson Motorsport has held talks with Port Adelaide Enfield Council and State Government agency Renewal SA on bringing a motorsport festival to the old wool stores off St Vincent St.

Event organiser Stuart Benson said although plans were in their “early stages” Port Adelaide was a prime spot for car races.

“I’ve always been fascinated by Port Adelaide and the potential for public events,” Mr Benson said.

“The rustic charm of the red brick industrial buildings and wide open spaces of the long abandoned docks are ideal for motorsport.

“It’s early days yet (but) I intend to soon present a motorsport-based new event concept specifically designed for the Port with a view to encouraging people who might not normally have a reason to visit the area and see its beauty.”

Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson said the event, which he hoped would be held annually, would attract up to 20,000 people, based on attendances at similar rallies held in the Adelaide Hills and Sydney.

Mr Johanson also said it illustrated the region’s tourism potential and “would open up the Port” to more people.

“It would be a huge boost for the sport and motorsport has a huge pulling power when it comes to events so that will be another economic boost to the area,” Mr Johanson said.

A previous bid to hold a stage of the Australian Targa Rally Championships in the Port, a point-to-point race held in various cities, was rejected in 2012 because the State Government would not provide funding.

Gillman was also rejected by the State Government as the site of a new $7.5 million racetrack, which will instead be built near Tailem Bend.

Renewal SA project manager Troy Jamieson said the race would suit Port Adelaide.

Mr Jamieson said he needed more information about the plans and had scheduled another meeting with Mr Benson this month. Mr Benson plans to seek funding from the State Government.

Former rally driver Tim Hearse, who runs Pacific Marine at Royal Park, said a car race in Port Adelaide would be a boost for the region.

His sentiments were echoed by Sporting Car Club of SA general manager Richard Blanden, who said the historic wool stores would provide the ideal venue for either a tarmac rally or historic festival.

“A touring type event would be fantastic,” Mr Blanden said.

“The location is accessible and it is relatively quiet from a traffic point of view so planning would be much easier, in terms of restrictions, etc.

“It is also a scenic area and families could make a day of it – there is lots to do down there.”

He also said it provided an opportunity to tap into Adelaide’s motorsport outside of the Clipsal 500 in March.
