When did you meet him? I've read heaps of stories on fchat from people/fans who've met him who found him very friendly and generous with his time. Some even talk about how he went out of his way to do things for them and/or their loved ones.

People often confuse confidence and arrogance.

Confident people CAN be both, but it's usually the frustrated that see confidence as arrogance.

In the case of Germans I guess one could see arrogance as confidence if they were in awe of their achievements.

Definitely not my experience, sadly.

Demanded I delete any photos I took of him and had no interest in talking with me even when I mentioned how big a fan I was - then stormed off.
