There is a little lag on the 3G due to the Wireless switching and conversion to optical interface.

I think that's what it is - on the PC there's almost zero lag, but with the phone it seems like it takes 1-6 seconds before anything happens, then it's all really quick.

At the moment, the voice part of the iPhone is still carried over the "old" speech network that goes mainly over fiber links, with some that go over radio links. These are mainly "mini" cells that run over the radio(microwave) links.

The problem is:
the speed between phone and Cell should be 8Meg, but this is slowed down by the "Grey" light optical gear.
There is an upgrade about to happen that will convert this to optical Ethernet all the way back to the Exchange.
This should give speeds of about 24Meg into the phone, in a perfect world of course.

I don't know the tech side of things, but stuff I read today indicates that the top speed of the iPhone is 3.6 somethingorothers.  I'm happy with the speed as is - would like less lag.

The speed between the phone and the Cell in reality at this time is about 1Meg.
These new iPhones I think can go to 3.2Meg but I think this can be upgraded to more BW down the track.
No use doing it at this time as the network will not be ready.

When I was involved with the speed testing, we were getting 1.5Meg out of the 3G Phones and a full 8Meg out of the Laptop Modems.
But that was when we were the only ones on there, it had not been opened to the public at that stage.

It's no where near as good now, but that is why they invented upgrades.  ;)

Even with full steam, the phones did lag. One of the Handset Techs did say it had something to do with the way the phone processed the data/info/blah blah blah that caused this Lag.

I read that the 3.? is a hardware limit based on some already outdated chipset.

As I said I'm not worried about getting more speed, I'd just like it to get off the mark quicker.

Ah, hardware limited, that is a small problem.

Unfortunately the smoke and mirrors in the phone itself is not really my field, but the Handset techs are mega geeks and do some really amazing things with their phones. Next time I have a chance to see the guys in the Workshop I will ask if they know of any tweaks that can reduce this lag problem.
