OK, that is a fair enough comment.

Why don't they have gears set up on the scooter????? I can't see that it would be that much of a problem to do it.

But in regards to the Tesla, I think the 2 speed gear box kept breaking, that is why they went back to the single speed job.

i can only think of extra expense. made no sense to me....it could have been a rocket, but instead it's usually lethargic.

so  it if keep breaking on the telsa, engineer one that doesn't!

I'm not 100% sure of the facts but I can remember reading something about this.
The first box was an "off the shelf" unit from Borg-Warner, not sure what it was used for but it wasn't design specially to go in the Tesla.
When they had troubles with them, they just used the signal speed unit cos' the R&D to engineer a multi speed box was going to cost lots of $$$$$$s.

Not sure where they have gone with it, but have not seen anything lately to say they are trying to develop a multi geared box.

CVT gearboxes (in cars) are crap and just about sale proof when second hand.
Why such a long face?

Um, my Mum has a Honda Jazz, which is equipped with a CVT and I can not fault it. It's a great little car to zip around in and very economic as well

It was a little weird to drive at first but it seems to work very well.
It has never given any problems before only that once when the battery went flat, it needed to be reset.

Honda dealers don't even know how they work. (for that matter, Honda can't make a very long lasting auto box either.)

I know of one that went in with change problems and the Honda dealer said it needed a new gearbox (at 60k's)

Luckily they sought a second opinion from their local mechanic who thought he may as well try and reset it by disconnecting the battery for 1/2 an hour.

It worked!!!  Car has done 20,000 k's since.

A CVT Civic is sale proof, an Audi the same.

With the double clutch gearbox's becoming more popular (and thus cheaper) that'll be the end of CVT.

Ah, that explains a few things. When the battery went flat and was replaced, the auto was behaving very badly. So it was the opposite problem.
The local dealer played with it but had no idea.

I found a page on a Web site that explained the method and a phone number. They told me the calibration procedures over the phone and fixed it no problems.

saying to me something like "I'm guessing you haven't heard about the instant torque of an electric motor." is ludicrous.

Why ludicrous?  I said I was guessing.

And my guess was based on you saying that it was dumb to not have multiple gears.

Now I realise my initial guess was wrong.  You apparently do know all about the instant torque of an electric motor...  you just chose to hide it initially.
