A Rolls-Royce convertible coupe owner who left his car in the rain with the top down outside an Adelaide cafe could be up for a repair bill of $100,000.

That's if the insurers don't decide to simply write off the $1 million vehicle entirely.

Several passers-by noticed the soaking Phantom Drophead Coupe, which was left for at least half an hour outside a Glenelg cafe, with some uploading footage to YouTube this month.

User Carrotsalesman said there was water pooling in the foot wells and the centre console was "drenched".

A commenter on another video of the car said he saw the owner return looking unconcerned.

"Guess if you can afford one of those cars you can afford to get it cleaned/repaired," said user 1stur. "Was damn funny though!!"

John Barsoumian, owner of Car Interior Plus in Sydney, said the rain could easily have damaged the leather seats, carpet and wood panelling.

"It could cost up to $100,000 if everything was damaged," Mr Barsoumian said.

"You won't know until you start assessing the damage.

"It could definitely also affect the electricals of the car and depending on the agreement and the way the car's insured it could be written off."

Mark Bonello, director at Sydney Motor Trimmers, agreed the damage could easily exceed $100,000.

A set of new leather seat covers alone would be about $40,000 to $50,000, he said.

"What it would come to is how quickly action was taken," he said. "If you saw it immediately, and got it home quickly and dried it outů if the car was stripped within a few days, most things would be okay.

"With leather, it depends how long it's exposed. If you got that car and left it for a couple of weeks your whole interior would be stuffed."

I agree with the comments that the car should have an auto close that's always on hooked into the rain sensor.
