High costs drive cars away from trade show

Sydney motor show organisers are crossing their fingers that crowds will return after a two-year gap since the last event.

By Philip King

Just 28 brands were on display in Darling Harbour when the show opened last night, in the first test of a revised schedule that stages a single annual show alternating between Sydney and Melbourne.

Many of the brands that shunned the show two years ago have again failed to turn up, citing revised marketing priorities.

Surprise absentee BMW said the timing was wrong for its model rollout. "For the expense, it wasn't seen as value for money this year," BMW spokesman Piers Scott said.

The event also failed to secure Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Citroen, imported by independent distributor Ateco Automotive.

Spokesman Edward Rowe said the internet was now a more efficient way of reaching customers than a motor show, where even a small stand cost $300,000. "The key question for us is: does it sell a car?" he said. Only Maserati among the Ateco stable came to the show, with its four-seat convertible Grancabrio.

Show director Russ Tyrie said he was happy with the brand turnout, which represented 95 per cent of the cars sold in Australia. He said the event was a unique opportunity to comparison shop. "You can do research on the internet, but there's nothing like comparing models and features at a show."

Crowd numbers plummeted 44 per cent in 2008 after a widespread boycott, led by Mercedes-Benz, in protest at the cost of exhibiting at two big city shows every year. It forced the rival organising bodies to compromise, with the event moving to Melbourne in July next year.

Returning to Sydney this year are Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Porsche and Mercedes. There was also a global debut for Ford's new Ranger ute.

The Australian International Motor Show runs until October 24 at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.
