Drive’s spies have snapped a prototype of a new Mercedes supercar that will become the spiritual successor to the company’s famous 1950s 300SL. JEZ SPINKS reports.

It may look like a Dodge Viper, but you’re looking at photos of a new Mercedes supercar prototype that will become the spiritual successor to the car maker’s famous 300SL Gullwing of the 1950s.

Mercedes has commissioned German company HWA – a spin-off of the car maker’s AMG tuning division – to develop a rival for the Audi R8 supercar.

The car will wear the SLC badge and could debut as a concept at March’s Geneva motor show – possibly including lift-up doors that mimic the 1955 300SL coupe. It is expected to be more compact and lighter than the Mercedes-McLaren SLR supercar when it goes on sale in 2009.

HWC will save significant weight by making the two-seater SLC the first Mercedes to be built from aluminium rather than steel.

A Jaguar source revealed to Drive that the next-generation SL roadster, not due before 2010, will also be made from the lighter but stronger metal. Mercedes engineers visited the British car maker’s production plant in 2006 to study how Jaguar assembled its all-aluminium XJ sedan.

Details of the SLC supercar remain top secret – even within Mercedes – although speculation says the likely engine to sit in the elongated nose is the AMG-tweaked 6.2-litre V8.

The V8 currently has power and torque outputs of up to 386kW and 630Nm respectively, although a turbocharger or supercharger could be added to send even more power to the SLC’s rear wheels.

Mercedes’ 460kW 5.4-litre supercharged V8 SLR supercar was produced in conjunction with the car maker’s English Formula One partner McLaren.

Disappointing sales and a less-than-smooth gestation period for the circa-$1 million SLR (which was never sold here because all are built as left-hand drive) encouraged Mercedes to abandon its co-operation with McLaren on a new, smaller supercar.

McLaren is now working on its own supercar project while HWA builds the SLC.

HWA was formed in 1999 by AMG founder Hans-Werner Aufrecht (hence the company name), and is based in Mercedes’ home city of Stuttgart.

The company is spending about $8 million to expand its production facilities for the new SLC.

The original 300SL Gullwing is one of the most collectible Mercedes ever built. In 2006 a gullwing Mercedes fetched $772,240 in an Australian auction held by Bonhams.

Trucking magnate Lindsay Fox has some as part of his extensive vehicle collection.

I like how they have tried to make it look like an Aston Martin in the front end.

I like how they've bought a Corvette and got the guys at Home Hardware to give it a facelift.

2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG first details

After tuning Mercedes-Benz vehicles for over 40 years, for the first time in its history AMG is set to unveil an all-new model developed exclusively in-house.

The forthcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG super sports car will revive the iconic ‘Gullwing’ namesake, boasting an aluminium spaceframe body and extensively tuned V8 front-mounted engine to deliver uncompromising performance.

The finely-tuned 6.3-litre V8 engine in the SLS AMG achieves a peak output of 420kW at 6800rpm - compared to 336kW in the C 63 AMG - and 650Nm at 4750rpm, making it one of the most powerful sports cars in its segment with a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.84kg/hp.

Initial performance tests have revealed the new ‘Gullwing’ accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 315km/h.

To reach these new heights in power, AMG employed an all-new intake system, reworked valve train and camshafts, the use of flow-optimised tubular steel headers and dethrottling of the exhaust system.

The switch to dry sump lubrication has also allowed engineers to lower the position of the engine in the vehicle, effectively lowering it’s centre of gravity for exhilarating driving dynamics.

The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission has been mounted at the rear to improve weight distribution, connected to the engine with an ultra-light carbon-fibre shaft – similar to the set-up used on the DTM C‑Class racing touring car.

The driver has the choice of four driving modes ranging from comfort to sports, a 3-stage ESP system as well as a RACESTART function for ultimate traction and safety together with exhilarating driving dynamics.

Keeping this power under control is an AMG high-performance composite brake package all-round with optional ceramic composite discs.

Development of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG began in the final quarter of 2006, due to be completed by the end of 2009 with the final production model available to customers in spring 2010.   http://aussieexotics.com/showroom/search.php?criteria=AMG

If I didn't know what it was, I would say it was an updated 2010 Dodge Viper from the second top pic!

I was leaning towards a honda S2000...

It just isn't an AMG merc.  You look at it and think "meh"...  sure technically it maybe the shit, but damn, it looks like it also!

If you look at the 1953 prototype (wiki) then the similarity is there.  But compared to what was brought out as a Gullwing, then the arrow isn't just missing the mark, its off into the crowd hitting Maude Flanders!

Some new photos and details of the 2010 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Gullwing have been released.  The car is expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September with a €150,000 pricetag.

One of the car's designers told Auto Motor und Sport about using the company's heritage to their benefit, while modernizing as much as possible.  This car harkens back to the roof-hinged doors the automaker used on the beautiful 1954 Mercedes 300 SL.  "...there must be a modern, entirely subscribed purist interpretation of a sports car for the 21st century," the designer told the magazine.

Designer Hartmut Sinkwitz, formerly in charge of design at Smart, said "The proportions should be consistent," having a lengthy hood with the cab seated upon the rear axle.

The airplane-inspired interior design is fully modernized, instead of being stripped down for weight.  A full-featured infotainment system sits front and center, with the stereo, Bluetooth, climate control, COMAND, and shifter mounted below, and surrounded with either aluminum or carbon-fiber trim.  Aluminum pedals match the metal used on the vents, gauges, steering wheel, and the rings around the controls.  Two gauges are placed behind the multi-function wheel, with a computer display in-between them.  Leather sports seats can be chosen in at least five different colors.  You can view the pictures at right to see close-ups of these images.

Of the exterior, Sinkwitz says, "..we have designed an extra steep A-pillar so the driver's field of view is not restricted."  The gullwing doors open up to 70 degree angles, giving access to the 1.08m high vehicle.

The front mid-engined vehicle will get a 571 hp V8 engine producing up to 650 Nm of torque.  Top speed is electronically limited to 315 km/h (196 mph), with the driver controlling the engine via the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
