If I understand correctly, the Mesoamericans never believed that the end of the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar, commonly referred to as Mayan Calendar, meant the end of the world, they always believed it rolled onto a new cycle and used to have big celebrations to mark the end of the cycle and the beginning of a new cycle.

Historians roll around laughing about the panic around the world because of this stupid movie!

I like this explanation:

The calendar was never going to end. I spent 15 minutes on wikipedia one day learning how it works. The date is simply going to change from 12.19.19.17.19 to 13.0.0.0.0. It's almost like it's just a new century, from 1999 to 2000, just the Mayan cycle is somewhere around 394 years long (called a b'ak'tun)... And this one happens to coincide with an equinox.
