15 plates went under the hammer on Monday the 5th of March at Shannons auction house in Melbourne, where 13 plates were sold!

Unfortunately it was the first time in a while that 2, 3-digit number plates did not manage to sell.

Some bargains hit the auction floor, as many plates were sold at the lower range of their guiding prices.

The results were as followed:
'289' - $55,000
'307' - $Passed in
'326' - $49,000
'327' - $55,000
'351' - $Passed in
'367' - $45,000
'511' - $43,000
'1-101 - $20,500
'4-222' - $16,500
'8-350' - $Passed in
'9-666' - $19,500
'12-888' - $9,000
'33-000' - $10,000
'68-868' - $11,000
'88-911' - $11,000

What was the biggest bargain of the night? '289', '326', '367' or '511'??

What was everyone's views on this auction?

Personally, I think there is a concerned consumer, who is very conservative in these difficult times.

My thoughts are that was some cheap buying.
I thought seriously about bidding on # 289 as I have # 288 on one of my cars; but as I now have five triple digit plates it's too many $$$ tied up already.

Firstly, you should've bid on 289... You WILL regret that, could've sold one of the others...
Secondly, I would not be selling any plates ATM, only buy...they can't get cheaper....3 digits were going for around the 80k mark here not long ago and Melbourne ones were not too far behind, they will get back up I am sure.
Here they do not hold anymore plate auctions, well for the time being, as none are even registering a bid, let alone selling. Last Shannon's auction, all 4 digit plates failed to get a starting bid of $30k!!
Dumb time for them for vic plates to be selling IMO

I agree with both of you. '289' was bought really cheap, but same with all the plates that night, maybe except for '327'.
It is a great time to buy plates at the moment, as in a couple of years you should double your investment.
Just out of curiosity what 3-digit plates do you have 360c? (If you want to say)
I still can't believe that all the plates sold so cheaply!

I agree, but of course you don't know what the eventual winner bidder's reaction might have been.  It could have gone for much, much more if the winning bidder decided he really wanted it.  I won a plate recently at auction and apparently (I was bidding by phone) the underbidder and I were the only ones going for half the bidding.  If the other guy had kept going, so would I have as I decided I was going to buy the plate.

True, but if you have the next number down, putting a bid or two of $1000 more wouldnt harm.....and they can always be sold as a pair....maybe worth that little more??? It's hard enough to get the numbers you want already....we had an auction here about 3 years ago where they sold a 4 & 5 digit blank number plate....successful bidder got to chose number, if it wasn't already displayed, naturally.

Interesting auction. Do we know what the bids reached on the plates that got passed in.

Because the numbers were mostly related to muscle cars rather than exotics, could that have had a something to do with lower bidding?

In theory a sequential pair if numbers are worth more; but it rarely happens in my experience.
All my plates are Ferrari model numbers, so # 289 doesnt fit the theme.
